summary and response of " Male Fixations" by Dave Barry

Summary:
Male seems to know how to fix things , even if they don't know how, they have to pretend everything is in their control. Dave Barry, the author of this article, think that fixing things is a historical tradition for men, but they never think of cleaning things. But the author consider that not all the men know how to fix things, and if they are ask to see some problem with some objects, they often ended with” nothing wrong with it” .

Dave Barry is one of the example of that situation, and he impute it to his tonsillitis in his childhood. Because of the tonsillitis, he cannot go to school and miss some class talking about machine. So whenever his wife asked him to check some machine to make sure if there is some problem or not, the author always pretend professionally-looking around and check- and said that everything goes well. Even if things go really don't well, he still denied to say there is anything wrong about that.

Dave Barry is cowed by man who know about machine. When he was in college his roommate fixed things by a toolbox, while author fixed muffing also with toolbox. Another bad experience was when a salesman told him he need to re-pack the bearing – with the tone that every men know how to do it., and he had to pretended he know how to do it.

The pretending of everything is in control may not just limit in machine, this might be a natural phenomena for male to act as if they control all the situation. The author supposed that this phenomena also happened when Titanic was sinking, that male tell their wife it is “perfectly normal”. This may also happened to our nation's leader nowadays, who telling us all the condition of the country is getting well.

After reading this article, I think I need to apologize to my little brother of my misunderstanding of male. While using computer, I always consider he need to familiar with all kind of function of computer, because he was studying computer science. But sometimes when the computer broke down, he cannot fixed it and it was me who let computer work again, I would make laugh at him. Maybe I shouldn't do that, because it may let my brother loose faith of computer and got a bad grad in class.

Sometimes we may put some pressure on other because of our superstitious on people. For example: female need to know how to cook a delicious meal, male need to know how to drive and never get lose, grandma always know some traditional prescription.... But the society is changing now, not all the people lives like what we suspect. In my consideration, male didn't need to act as if they know every thing, no one would laugh at them if they say“ I don't know”. Because we all know that we are just human not god. I won't laugh at my female friend if they say they don't know how to cook, for I don't cook very well either. I won't think male who can't dive are stupid, because the traffic is very convenient in Taiwan.

Male fixations may not be a natural phenomena, but just a pressure that male put on for themselves. Because they are afraid of admit that they don't know how to do, and being embarrassed let other knows that they can't handle the situation. So, for all male, sometime you just need to step backward and let professional person to help you!!
