Male Fixations

Summary
Nowadays, there is still a kind of gender stereotype that men should have abilities to know how to fix the things in our daily life. The author mentioned that it is man’s typical trait to fix the things, however, they didn’t have to clean the bathroom because they need to keep energy in case a machine breaks out suddenly.
Nevertheless, when women asked them to fix things, they always pretend as if they know everything well. Take an example from this article, one day the wife told him that the commode groans loudly, there may be something wrong with it. The man walked aside it and examined as carefully as he was an expert. After this, he would say “There is nothing wrong with the commode” to avoid the responsibility of fixing it.
Besides, the author accused the reason that made he couldn’t handle these problems well was caused from tonsillitis when he was in the ninth grades. Absenting school often made him have little chances to discuss the machines such as carburetors, gromments, “dado joints” and so on with his classmates.
The author concluded that because of the fear, he usually disguised and denied there‘s ever anything wrong with anything.
In the end, the author considers “guys have a natural tendency to act as though they’re in control of the situation even when they’re not.” Even the federal leadership is a basic group of that guys we mentioned.
Response
Even living in modern life nowadays, people still have a gender stereotype. In their traditional thoughts, they consider men should know everything and have abilities to fix household electrical appliances while women should have responsibilities to clean the house such as washing dishes, laundering clothes and so on. But in my opinion, I totally not agree with these principles. I think women can also fix electrical, similarly, even men can do housework. There is actually no difference between genders; the relationships between men and women are equal.
In traditional thought, some may think it is shamed for men who couldn’t fix things. But in my opinion, I don’t care about this. I think a man shouldn’t pretend as he knew everything and could deal it well. If he couldn’t handle things, just spend some money hiring an expert to help him solve the problems. Then referred to aspect of housework, most important of all, men should share housework together and not think it is whole matters of women.
In conclusion, we should get rid of gender stereotype. We should complete one thing together and not divide it into a man’s duty or a woman’s. If we change our thought, everything will seem more fair and equal.

Appearances Are Destructive

Summary
The article “Appearances Are Destructive” which was written by Mark Mathbane, who urged that dress codes can not only protect students from school violence but also promote students’ learning. Take Mark’s two sisters for example, Mark enrolled his sisters at the public school in America because the better educational environment than South Africa’s. However, students seem to pay more attention on their bodies than minds in many areas. So the dress styles of Mark’s sisters became mocks at school. This reason contributed to their desire to transfer to another school. The strong competition among students is often the expensive objects than their academic achievements. Teachers feel failures to teach because of those who care about their appearances disrupted the students who are willing to learn in such a disordered class. We can take parents as the results of this situations, they over pampered their children in luxuries. Parents who don’t have so much money to satisfy their children may be considered as uncaring and cruel.
When students are asked why they pay much attention on their daily dress, they always answered “it’s the cool thing to do,” and it not only gives them high status but also earns them more respect. Mark saw the argument by civil libertarians against dress codes as misleading, for dress codes were everywhere in our daily lives without harming freedoms, which demonstrated by flight attendants, employees of fast-food chains, military personnel and so on.
School dress codes can enhance a proper learning environment for students. It can also make students feel more neat, disciplined in learning because they don’t need to care about their dressing styles.
Response
No matter dress codes exist or not, it is students’ responsibilities to focus on schoolwork than appearances. Nowadays, students pay too much attention on their outlooks. When passing through the classroom, you can see almost each student all has a mirror in their hands. They paint their fingernails, comb their hair, shine their huge shoes, or even compare with the brands of jackets, caps, and jewelry. Although appearance is important, it is not suitable in the age of students. Teachers should act a role to instruct students how important a wisdom is, and one’s values lies not on looks but minds. As we know, a handsome boy often attracts a lot of girls. Similarly, even girls, who are beautiful, are more popular. But have you ever thought that if one day they lost their beauty, shall they still be attractive as before?
In my opinion, I agree with schools to have dress codes. Some may think dress codes infringe on the freedom of expression, but it has no influences on those who work as flight attendants, bus drivers, sports teams and so on. Dress code may restrict the way people wear, but on the other way, if people all wear the same, isn’t it represent they are the team, community, and organization. In conclusion, dress codes have their pros and cons, sometimes what you dress may not represent whole your personality.

Ordinary People Produce Extraordinary Results

Summary
This article “Ordinary People Produce Extraordinary Results” which was written by Paul Rogat Loeb, is about Rosa Park, a woman who refuses to get up and give her seat in white section to white people. This behavior earned Rosa a name of “mother of the civil rights movement.” A few years ago, the author had a chance to go on CNN, and Rosa would be interviewed in the same show. We knew Rosa had spent a lot of time on many different activities in order to pursue the human right for a long time. However, everyone was still shocked by the courageous action that Rosa refused to give up the seat to a white person on the bus. Brief to say, Rosa was not a single-handedly person fighting for civil rights efforts. She was one of those just representations of movement for change. It reminds us that her ordinary motivation of getting involved was just as courageous and critical as the fabled moment when she refused to give the seat.
Although people shaped Rosa as a model of our society, the rewrite of her story creates an impossible standard to meet our real life. The media represent Rosa Parks as a large-than-life figure and create dramatic standard; nevertheless, by knowing Rosa’s story should inspire our courage and conscience. The actual story is Parks involved a lot of meeting and kept on the deeply uncertain projection.
Rosa’s personal story conveys a moral that is lost in her public myth. So in our society, despite with all uncertainties and doubts when we act, we still have a chance to shape the history.
Response
After reading this article, I find that media often mislead people to shrine a heroic as a larger-than-life figure. It established an image as if we cannot achieve the same level as them. In fact, what makes them success is they have a courage and confidence to work hard and pursue their goals.
For this reason, we must know what we do can make our life better and no matter who devote to have contributions to our society would have a qualification to call hero.
Everyone can do such a worthy thing together to have a better life. For example, you can help others not only for others but for yourself. Take 921 earthquake for example, many people come all over the world as volunteer to help Taiwan rebuild the hometowns. They gathered together and worked hard in order to achieve the same goal. No matter what human races, their major aim is to rescue the people who suffered from a natural disaster. This is totally different from the article that the media consider that a hero as a dramatic standard.
In conclusion, all of us are a gear of our society, in order to make life better, we should know how to shift public sentiment, challenge entrenched institutional power and find the strength to persevere despite all odds. So, if we want to make a new revolution, we should have more courageous than those ordinary people.

A View from Mount Ritter

Summary
The article “ A View from Mount Ritter” which was written by Joseph T. O’ Connor when he was just an eighteen-year-old senior high student. This article described how a mountain climbing event changed the way of the life Jo` 1qzseph thought.
In their first week of journey, the weather was nice and there had no cloud in the sky. However, in their second week, the weather changed fast without any prediction. The dark cloud black the bright and blue sky with a bolt of lightning and thunder cracked. The unforgiving downpour lasted long time and they began to seek a place to be their shelter. After having constructed the tents, they found something wrong that they set their shelter on a small island which was around the streams. As a result, they experienced the rain poured down continuous and a small stream made its way through the tent.
During these adventure experiences, the author found that the power of nature was invigorating, fulfilling, and stimulating. This was an important turn for him to change the way of life he thought.
Robert Louis Stevenson said that, “Youth is wholly experimental.” There may be mistakes but also successes in its mean. Joseph chose to ignore the suggestions that parents, teachers gave. He failed to study and addicted in playing soccer. He thought it is unnecessary to do practice and to get good grades. In the first, he didn’t agree with what quoted from Oscar Wilde, “To get back one’s youth one has merely to repeat one’s follies.” But now, he totally agreed with it after he realized the results of his own follies. Joseph changed a lot after experiencing the camping, he become a hard work person and be more responsible for himself.
Response
After reading the article, we can easily find the author used many marvelous words and sentences to describe his journey. The vivid description makes me feel as I was living in the scene that he described. In the article, the author experienced an unforgettable adventure and really learned a big lesson from this chance. The change of the way author thought really affects the entire of his own life. He really turned a new leaf for himself and made some changes in his future. I learned from the story that it is never too late for us to make a change.
Now, I will take my personal experience for example, when I was just a primary school student. I once took a vacation to Yu Shan National Park with my family. This trip really made a big impression on me. I still remember the beautiful scenery in that place, the orange-red sun suddenly appeared from the hill and the spectacular view of sea clouds.
I really believe that nature can cultivate people’s minds. After experiencing the marvelous moment, I told to myself that I should keep an optimistic attitude towards life in the future. I must live as that orange-red sun and with powerful energy all day long. In conclusions, beautiful scenery can relax one’s mind and sometimes it will be an important key to change one’s thoughts from pessimistic to optimistic.

Ordinary People Produce Extraordinary Results

Ordinary People Produce Extraordinary Results

Summary:

By refusing to proffer her seat to a white man she has got a name to herself, Rosa Parks, an African American. She used to be an ordinary person but she produced extraordinary results and rewrote both her and American history that indicates us every featureless people may succeed with no doubt. And we have a chance to write world in a new form.

Her achievement is not an accident. She did it by attending many opposing racial segregation and meeting old civil right activists to success. However, media presents her as a heroine, someone is so noble not like us, common people, that she can achieve the great thing suddenly. Author points out that the media misunderstands the figure of hero. People all take in a wrong sense on Rosa Parks, they thought she was born to be a heroine. Instead, the author wants us to clearly see what efforts she did before. She never gave up every action to show her mind on opposing racial segregation. Further, he explains that the success takes place on someone who is prepared ready. Also if we can tie-up and combined efforts together, the next new history will be written by we, and the social change will come soon. Because everyone is equally brought to this world, and all of us have a probably chance to change this world.

Reflection:

Rosa Parks encourage me a lot that I believe we, common people, also have an amazing power to do what we want. Probably you when you see a certain celebrity on the report you will take your eye on his or her achievement at first. And sometimes you may think it takes a quirk of fate to turn a man into a hero. But the efforts what they had paid behind them are so hard that we can’t imagine it. The media always like to portrait the bright side of the issue, and exaggerate or even stretch the words that easily to misunderstand the reader. The fact is only with the more effort and striving toward the goal, and the most important of all is not to give up that you may be a hero one day. After all, holding a noble title is not an easy job. There is no such thing as a free lunch, and you must work for what you want. Such as Napoleon and Albert Einstein that who had not faced continuous fail? But they did, they are not defeated and success in the end. No pain no gain. That’s what we learn from them. Base on these famous examples, I can much more certainly say “ordinary people produce extraordinary results.”

Appearances Are Destructive

Appearances Are Destructive

Summary:

In the new semester of public schools, the school violence is always debated again and again, and metal detectors and security guards can help to reduce these problems. But author, Mark Mathabane finds there is quite a another big issue to discuss in campus, after his two sisters were sent from South Africa to American public school, with more modern and advanced instruction. It’s dress codes used to protect students and promote learning. However, Mark’s sisters intend to transfer to different school, because they are frequently taunted by their classmates then and this situation never happen in their former school in South Africa. In South Africa students have to wear uniforms instead of putting jewelry or using brand objects. He finds it’s not only happen in this school, but also in other schools. Many students take more attention on the brand on their body rather than the quality or knowledge they own. Also the teachers are frustrated how to teach students the different meanings on study and appearance. Today students would think it’s the way to represent their status and to earn respect from others. Their parents, as meanwhile, base on the parental love would give them money for buying expensive objects to compete with their classmates, and if their parents don’t do so, they will be considered uncaring and cruel. Then the worse things like doing illegal trades to make money for consuming would happen on these children.

After these cases, Mark points out dress codes wouldn’t reduce our freedom of expression supported by civil libertarians, and jobs could show the evidence, such as bus driver, sport teams and so on. Or the students under the dress codes perform better due to there is a proper learning environment. In the end, he suggests it’s time for Americans to figure out the dress codes doesn’t that really infringe on freedom of expression and is better to protect students and promote learning.

Reflection:

Today, the rule of dress codes is not as harsh as before. In Taiwan, the students should wear the uniform in school for a long time. But in recent years, some schools relax the limit of the dress codes or even broke this rule because of the voice from civil libertaians. The teachers can easily find that students are not as obedient as before, and they can’t control them very well. Students only focus on whose appearance is the best and everyone would want to be more attractive. By wearing expensive clothes to earn other’s respects, or putting shinning earring and jewelry, combing their hair and using anything as possible as it were famous brands. The more ridiculous thing is that they can own such objects are all because of the parental love. They get these all from their father or mother not by themselves. Why wouldn’t they go to find a job to earn money to buy what they want, and instead of crying for mother for money without any pay. Distinctly, the value in our society is getting worse. We shouldn’t judge a person by his or her appearance, like the classmates of the author’s sisters. What is the more important thing we suppose to care about is the knowledge or the connotation inside the body. I surely believe that that can represent our status and quality. The manner what you talk and stand also speaks out who you are. So why not starting from your sprit rather than buying brand if you want to promote your individual status. Most of all, the insider beauty is far more important than outside.

Male Fixations

Male Fixations

Summary:

Most of guys think it’s their responsibility to fix things well instead of cleaning the bathroom. Or a guy can just go into a bathroom rather than clean it, because he is afraid of facing a problem of Mechanical Emergency. The author gives a example for that. A guy would ultimately say there is nothing wrong with the commode after he pretends he knows how to fix it, and even the commode keeps making so loud groaning noise that seems to have a baby commode soon. Author blames his non-ability for tonsillitis which happened in his ninth grade that he missed the lesson of mechanicalness. His college roommate, Rob, just like some guys can fix things well, comparing with him, author would be puzzled with toolbox. And another experience of author is he lied to the salesman he can repack a bearing even he totally knew nothing about that. He did so because the salesman said “all guys come out of the womb with this instinctive ability to repack a bearing” and he didn’t want to be laughed.

He always answers to his wife that there is ever anything wrong with anything. He uses positive reasons to respond the troubles such as the engine with the grinding sound and a big hole and the abnormal hall light switch due to electrocuted houseguests with sparks from their body in the hall. Lastly he concludes that it is guy’s natural tendency to perform they can control the situation even they actually can’t. He instances that it’s just in a second before the Titanic slipped into the sea, there are still some guys explaining to his mate that everything is perfectly normal. Or the federal leadership tells citizens it’s no problem with budgets.

Reflection:

I don’t think the guys must have a great ability to fix things whether the girls must should do all the housework. It is not shame to admit that what things you can’t do. Refusing to admit the fact is only to cause a larger problem. Also, just to ask someone for a hand is that hard? No, for sure. Some guys don’t do this simple acts is just because of their sense of self-respect and face. They think it’s a kind of ways to show their manhood. But it doesn’t seem effective if you did it. Because the problems are still not solved, and it may become worse day by day. However, if you don’t have a mechanical ability and you also want to fix things by yourself, then you can learn such skills rather than cheating others like Beth, or blaming it on you miss the lesson in school. As our leaderships of government, too much of them like to give notion a bad check. They always think the situation they could control it well at beginning. But in the end, not every incident goes as smooth as they thought at first. And sometimes they even had known the result before, yet they still as Beth to deny the fact and pretend everything is in control. So I think it all due to a one reason that the face and self-respect or pride are taking too much in guys. In some cases, to look for talents is as well as a good and quick way to solve the problems.

Summary and Response- A View from Mount Ritter

A View from Mount Ritter- Summary

People usually alter their attitude after experiencing unforgettable disaster. The author, Joseph T. O’Connor, also experienced it which makes him change a lot when he was a senior high teenage. Before the event, he was a rebellion teenager. However, things changed after he decided to join a mountaineering program.

In his two weeks long adventure, something unusual happened to him. This uncommon event happened on second-week Tuesday. The weather changed in every moment without any warning. The blue sky also changed to dark, and it became everything wrong. It rained a lot and the thunderstorm kept all day long. Before they found a shelter, the lightning struck closely to the author. Then, the unforgiving pouring downpour made the author experience his worst night building their tents in cold and darkness and stay awake all night.
Luckily, he was reborn after that event. He always ignored others’ suggestion before. But, he changes his attitude to the people now. Nevertheless, he starts to buckle down in his final year in high school. He finds his goal of life. The ending of the authors’ story just as Jonathan Harker’s experience in his journal: “No man knows ‘till he was suffered from the night how sweet and how dear to his heart and eye the morning can be

A View from Mount Ritter- Response

It is the common story that people always experience the period of dark life and then they will work hard to make life better. Then, they will live with happy as a kind of fairy tale ending. It seems that people have to suffer huge disaster first and then change their attitude toward their life.

For me, after entering the university, I have to admit that I actually change a lot. From a childish person to a mature one, I can feel myself undergo a different conversion. Besides, I love my family more. I deeply find that they are the most important people in my life. None of these will appear my mind before. However, I still expect to have the same experience as the author had. Maybe it would be the chance for most of us thinking more. Actually, it happened to me recently. I knew many people from famous university. I find some specialties from them. That is confident, hard, and kind. It really makes me relocate myself.

In fact, I ask myself why I cannot learn these experiences from others’. If we can learn some lesson from others’, our parents’, famous people’s experience, we will save the time and have the sweet fruit quickly.

The Decline of Neatness

Summary:

In “The Decline of Neatness,” Norman Cousins claims that “sloppiness virus” has affected all areas of our society. The phenomena contains our style of dress, our casual speaking habits our apathetic attitude toward violence and brutality, and our ineffective human relationships. First, Cousins points out that wearing the frayed, torn and disheveled is the symbol of the times.

With disheveled, casual or cool look those who think it’s more fashionable, however, Cousins says their looking is as though it had been stamped out by cookie cutters. And the appearance of alienation is their triumphant goal. He follows reasons to discuss the sloppy speech we talk so often today. He says people now use chopped-up phrases instead of complete sentences to communicate, and the ability of English language is descending. Also the screenwriters resist turning in scripts, because the speech is so violent and foul that results in casual attitudes toward all violence and brutality. These could be easily seen in movies and TV that desensitizes us and becomes a mindless violence person.

Finally, he indicates that our human relationships are affected by such sloppiness that can evidently be seen in casual attitudes toward sex in films. We, people, choose to watch these and then lose our feelings and privacy. Cousins in the end concludes that he doesn’t ask us to come back to Victorian attitudes, though he doesn’t want these sloppiness still be there. He suggests people should pursue genuine creativity and know how to locate our best to work.

Reflection:

There are many “sloppiness virus” we can easily find in our society today. Due to the sexual exploitation that “deadens feelings and aunihilates privacy,” our speech, dress, attitudes become worse and sloppy. We, indeed, are easily affect by these phenomena, and how to control all of us not to lose our natural sprits is what we should to think about deeply.

The leadership of this society should make a good example to their notion and educate people what behaviors are right or wrong. To be a fine customs is not a easy job. Most of us are self-absorbed. We just want to go by our way, and don’t want to listen to others’ advices. That is why the sloppiness virus keep increasing rather than diminish. Just like the students or teenagers today, most of them want to dress fashionable, speak rudely or do something special to catch someone’s eye. For example, they would speak with four words, wear strange clothes or hairstyle, do something without manners and destroy the object and so on. Indeed, it work, but they don’t realize what people would think about them. In others’ mind, their performances are so absurd that they are living in their own world with proud having too great self-esteem. However, I believe, one day when they grow up or get order, they will regret to do so, but it’s too late to repent. So we should think twice before we do, or one slip, and you will regret forever.

Summary and response – Getting to Know about You and Me

Summary

The article Getting to Know about You and Me is a story about a Jewish girl. Once she had an opportunity to take apart in National Science Foundation Young Scholar program in the University of Wisconsin at Superior. She quickly made friends with other students from other school and had a good time. Students in their group had different backgrounds, and they represented eight religions. Everyone was curious about other’s backgrounds and their religions. They discussed with others through the knowledge that they had already known or their own opinions. Sometimes they did not deliberately offend the author, but she still got hurt from them. The worst of all, one of the professors did something ignorant to her and made her uncomfortable. She had an astounding experience. She thought respecting other culture was an important thing. People could learn more about other knowledge and understand them. As a result, people could avoid being threatened by others. Ignorance may bring about some problem like misunderstandings or prejudice. She decided to tell about her religion on the religious holiday. She wanted to share about her story with everyone and make them more understand the Jewish.

Response

After reading the article Getting to Know about You and Me, written by a sixteen-year-old Jewish girl, I learn many things and ask myself if I had the same experience or I had done the same thing to others. There are many kinds of people all over the world. We may have different cultures, religions, colors of skins or languages. Sometimes we would judge others because they are different from us. We may offend them because of our misunderstandings. It will be ok if others do not mind. However it may be a problem if others take it seriously. Although we usually ignore others, we can learn how to avoid being rude. We learn how to respect each other and learn more from them. Totally accepting other cultures is difficult, but we can appreciate them and shared our viewpoints with them.
There are various people all over the world, so that it makes our world more colorful. Everyone has its own story. We can participate in the activities of other culture to understand them. We learn their advantages to improve ourselves. The most important thing is that we should respect each other. As the saying goes, “Do not do to others what you do not want to be done to you.” If we respect others, then they will also respect us. It can make the world better.

Summary and Response of The Right to Choose Death

Summary:
In “The Right to Choose Death” this article, the author takes a little girl to home. This girl had developed an infection and it almost affected her life. After a great staff of doctors and a state-of-the-art facility helped to cure, this girl overcame her affliction and got well.

In fact, this girl is a dog and the author , her owner, is afraid of her death. He thought if his dog, called Megan, crossed that invisible line between living and dying and the author and his wife would helped her find relief. Even if she is a dog, they still did their best to help their dog to find it. The reason is that every animal all has rights to choose how the way they can live.

Therefore, in this case, a low, which patients can choose to end their suffering, is passed in seven years. Life is a precious gift. When we confront the death, we still need to peaceably accept it and let the death become more dignified.

On one hand, life is for the living, and on the other hand, death is also for the dying. We can use positive attitude in place of unfounded fears. The dog , Megan, also has the option to choose death if she feels so painful.

Response:
After reading this article, we can realize that no matter you are animals or human beings, you all have rights to live or even to choose to die. Because life belongs to ones existence and it also represents ones value, we had better to value every creature’s lives.

In this modern generation, more and more people think highly of having rights to live or die. According to those issues, there are some related laws are passed. Patients can choose to end their life when they indeed feel very painful. Their lives do not be decided by their relatives. It will become much fairer between patients and relatives because patients understand their situations. Perhaps to die is a best way for those who get serious ills.

My grandfather also had the same situation. He got lung cancer and was in the final period. Then he knew he was going to die so he asked his son, my uncle, sent him to home and gave up to keep curing. He chose to end his life in this way and he was content with this kind of way. I am happy that my grandfather could choose this way to die. Maybe that is the best way for him so I felt he was happiness at that time even though he passed away. He carried out his rights to end his life because the meaning for him is precious.

To sum up, people can choose what ways to live or die is happiness. Therefore, looking upon ones rights to choose live or die is essential if we value it very much. In my opinion, if I can choose what ways I can live, I will do my best to fight for my rights no matter how hard for me.

Summary and Response- Male fixations

Male fixations- Summary

It seems to be the nature ability for men to fix everything wrong. Men usually take fixing for their born responsibility to avoid cleaning. However, Dave Barry takes himself for examples and do not agree this convention idea at all.

Whenever the author has to face the fixing problems in the house, he will act professionally to check it out and always say that everything is fine. Even if the machine makes loudly noise, he still wants to has the face rather than admit there is something wrong. Actually, all he does are because of his lake ability of fixing knowledge. He always blames it on his disability for the tonsillitis. Because of the tonsillitis, he missed some class of machine. He thinks it is all because the tonsillitis to make him have no idea about machine.

Moreover, he had ever had a roommate who knows the machine a lot. He therefore has the huge pressure about that. Besides, there is still a bad experience for him. A salesman imply him that man should know about how to re-pack bearing as a man. With the afraid of others’ discrimination, he had just to pretend to know how to do.The author just used to using his pretending skill to keep men’s dignity and shows us men’s responses to make everything in control.

Male fixations- Response

After reading the article, I cannot deny that I expect men can fix the machine-related problems and solve the emergency problems. Although I want to feel sorry about them, I still cannot realize why they always look confident whenever I ask them to solve problems. After some experiences, I become believe myself than men.

There is an example of my male friend. We had an experience to go traveling by car without GPS. I found there is something wrong with him. Actually, I can felt strongly that he got lost. Nevertheless, when I asked him, he just told me that he could found the correct location. Even then, he would not believe what direction I pointed to him. Finally, the fact proved that I have more sense of direction than he does. This is the first time I start to suspect the ability of men.

The other bad experience happened when I traveled by myself with my elder brother. One day of our traveling, we missed the last buss. Before I started to worry what we should do next, my brother cried loudly and told me that he would never be the packager. Finally, I took this baby brother to the hotel.

After these two experiences, I start not to believe men. I find women can do things well by us, because most of men I know act with proud and have no ability do things well. I believe women can fix things out. Indeed, they must do in this new generation.

Summary and Response- Appearances Are Destructive

Appearances Are Destructive- Summary:

The author of this article, Mark Mathbane, points that dress code could both protect student from school violence and promote their knowledge on learning. He took his two sisters in American school for examples. Because of the better education in American than in South Africa, Mark enrolled his two sisters at American public school with great expectations. However, other students mocked his sisters, just because the clothes they wore. They not only cried for this, but also wanted to transform their school.

After telling his sisters that there was nothing wrong with them, he visited other public schools and found that what his sisters encountered was unique. Because students in school cared not about their minds but about their appearances, it seems to be the common phenomena for now American students. Moreover, he found students were more familiar with names of brands rather than names of famous literature authors. They even measure parental love by how much their parents will spend on their clothing. Because of this kind of competition, some poor children may get involved with gangs or peddle drugs to raise the money. Girls also dress only sexy clothes up for more attractive than work harder in learning subjects. They have wrong ideas about appearances.

Therefore, Mark points this misleading of society and shows us lots of career keep their own uniforms. School dress codes can provide the order in the school and even provide the better learning environment. Students will also benefit from it by focusing more on their learning subjects. American school should admit that dress codes could make more benefits of safe and effective schools than the freedom of expression.

Appearances Are Destructive- Response

In Taiwan, most of schools, except from universities, keep their convention of wearing uniforms. It is an old rule that student should wear uniforms. However, things become different recently. Some schools lift the ban; more and more students complain or even protest the “strict” rules. Students seek the freedom of clothes that I do not agree with them.

As if I am a student in the school with lots of rules in students’ appearance, I must opposite for the sake of opposing. Maybe schools can concern students’ feeling and give them a little space. Such as making students design and choose their uniforms or inviting the famous designer to design. Nevertheless, some schools even agree student to wear casual clothes to school.

However, being an adult, I cannot agree these students nowadays. Because even giving the freedom of wearing clothes, they always have no idea about what is better one in the different occasions. In my student life, our school still had had the strict rules about how long our hair could be. If schools give them too much choices, they tend to become too much. In addition, parents need to make self-examinations. Many parents today spoil their children. They should take the responsibility of what their children become. I believe the old convention keep its reason and we should inheritance it rather than throwing it away.

Summary and Response of History101: Pass the Popcorn, Please

Summary:
The author, Elaine Minamide, writes this article “Pass the Popcorn, Please.” She takes some arguments to persuade her readers that students or children can learn history or culture from media because they are easily hooked by VCR or movies. However, older siblings debate some issues about this way.

A famous cram school, called Sesame Street, succeeds to use VCR to teach English for children. The way Sesame Street using is to sing and dance. However, most educators didn’t agree until they participate in their teaching programs. Obviously, this teaching way is greater than traditional teaching way. Therefore, more and more teachers are accommodating them. For example, in the San Diego Union-Tribune focused on local teachers who frequently supplement classroom instruction with contemporary films.

Maybe it is a good way for students to learn, but, however, there is also an argument which indicates students spend more time watching TV and movies than reading books. This issue needs to be explored from a broader view. In author’s opinion, she thinks that audio-visual learning is just one of teaching ways to enhance students’ learning motivations rather than substitute the main course.

To sum up, there are neither advantages nor disadvantages in a new teaching way, but if this way can promote children or students to learn, they are all good ways for teachers to apply in the courses. The author thinks audio-visual learning is just a better way for learning.

Response:
There are a lot of teaching ways which teachers can apply them in their courses. However, it must have a proper teaching ways for students in different ages. The audio-visual learning actually is appropriate for children. It has been a common teaching way that most cram school which teaches children from kindergarten to elementary school.

Why is it a proper teaching way for this range of children? In my opinion, the range of children can not concentrate on one thing for a long time. Take my teaching experience as an example, I have a student who is six years old. He can not concentrate on one subject constantly. Therefore, I need to change my teaching way to teach him. I always teach today’s course first, and then we will have a game on the second step. Thus, courses and games will exchange all the time in order to enhance his learning efficiency. Through my inspection, I find that it is a good way which can indeed enhance learning efficiency.

Therefore, it is based on how we apply those teaching ways into the courses. We can think what ways are appropriate for which part students, and enhance their learning wills. There are not the worst teaching ways or the best teaching ways. Only students can easily absorb those learning targets and those ways are all the best ways for students.

To sum up, we can adjust our teaching ways for our learners. If learners could learn what we teach, we has achieved the goal which is a good teaching way for students. So there are lots of teaching ways, they are based on how we use.

Summary and response - A View from Mount Ritter

Summary
The article A View from Mount Ritter was written by Joseph T, O’ Connor, an eighteen-year-old boy. It is a story about his experience and change after a trip. He attended a mountaineering program in the Sierra after his junior year in high school. The weather was good in the first week. However, it changed suddenly and quickly in the second week. The weather was so bad that they had to be very careful on their journey. There were many times that the author was in danger. He had the worst night that day. After the trip, he thought it was a invigorating experience and he would never forget. The most important thing was that he changed his thought of life. He was a rebel. He thought he could do everything well without any help or suggestion. Nevertheless, because of the unforgettable trip, he decided to be a good student in his final year in high school. He corrected his disadvantages and studied hard to get god grades. He was thankful for this advantage in his life. He thought he became a new man and found what he wanted.

Response
After reading the article A View from Mount Ritter, I feel that we can learn many things from nature. Just like the author in the article, sometimes we would be confused with our life. We would rather believe ourselves than trust our parents or teachers. It often leaded us to the wrong way. If we can not find the right methods, we can try to take some trips and contact with nature. Maybe we get some new thoughts or learn something from nature like the author. As I was a child, my parents liked to take me to travel. When I contacted with the nature, I always felt calm and thought many things. Sometimes I could get a new inspiration when I walked in the mountain. Taking trips is a good way for me to listen to my mind.
On the other hand, after reading the story, I think people usually changed after a big disaster or suffered from some bad experiences. They learned the lesson from these experiences. Sometimes, they will cherish what they have now more because they lose something. I was impressed by what the author quoted from Jonathan Harker, “No man knows ’till he has suffered from the night how sweet and how dear to his heart and eye the morning can be.” I think it is very useful for me.

Video Games Can Be Helpful to College Students

Summary:

According to the report, even thought video games may let students ignore their studies; it plays a major and positive role for college student’s social intercourse. This study was based on the Pew Internet and American Life Project which divided the video games into two parts, including through the personal computer and video-game console.
Steve Jones, a supervisor of this researcher, claims that play video game wouldn’t influence other activities for this generational college student. Because it has been accompanied them since they were in the kindergarten, it already been blended with their daily life. This study shows that one in five college students regard video games could help them build friendship and sixty percent students feel it is good for diversion, which was based on more than 1,100 college students.
Besides, this research also demonstrates difference on gender. Women play computer games more than men, but less than men when play console games. This variation may result in different game’s style. Console games are usually more boisterous and rigid gender characters which is less lure to women. And men consider games as something that they expect to do it, but it just cheats the time for women.
But games seem to disturb study time; there are a third of students admit that they had been played games during class. However, researchers point that most of students still assign appropriate time on their studies. Although new games are constantly on the market, it is necessary for everyone knows how to make appropriate arrangements on fictitious and real world.

Reflexion:

Video games are a new way of entertainment in the modern world. Thanks to new technology have been emerged; there are several types of games which lead people into virtual world. More and more people enjoy playing video games during their free time. In the games, you can do anything what you can’t do in the human community, including marry with stranger, kill monsters even be a billionaire overnight. That’s why lots of people indulge in the on-lone games.
However, except adults, there are many children who are addicted to playing videogames. If children can’t restrain themselves from video games, they will be badly affected by video games. For example, some video games may mislead children with wrong information. Many scenes in games are not based on real life. Most action, melee, or narrow escapes which are showed in games are impossible to perform in reality. Some common scenes in games are not real, too. For an instance, in the games, players always need to take all the ammo of a pistol just kill a single person; shooting oil barrels or cars causes massive explosions. These may mislead children’s knowledge and they may hurt themselves while doing the same things. Besides, these games often contain violence and filthy language that are not suitable for children. Children’s behavior may be influenced by the content of video games without being aware of it.
Playing games is not a harmful thing. But it is necessary to choose games which correspond with one’s age and help for their development of mind. No matter what kinds of games, it is just a tool of pastime and you still need come back to real society.

The Decline of Neatness

Summary:

According to this article, the author, Norman Cousins, claims that the “sloppiness virus” has gradually diffused to the four corners of the earth. This kind of virus affects us on the mode of dress, informal speech, slipshod attitude on violence and ruthlessness, and futile human relationship.
First, the author argues our style of dress. Blue jeans can stand for our generation, but rather than complete and neat, modern people prefer wearing tattered and discolored one. Cousins points that although today’s sloppy dress represent fashion trend, it undoubtedly makes people look like they had been “stamped out by cookie cutters.”
Besides, our speaking ways also deteriorate. Without using complete sentences and graceful language, people prefer to shorten phrase but fail to make sentences more coherent. What’s more, violent language gradually invades our society, because more and more violent and cruel elements are added on our movie. And children would become benumbed and brutal. It could let them turn a blind eye to someone who was hit by others. The effect on watching TV also lead youngster becomes a couch potato who just sits sluggish and munches popcorn in front of the TV.
Finally, the author analyses that untidy dressing, speech and emotion may affect human relationship. Too much sex in films may reduce our feeling on toward sex and also strip our privacy. Cousins concludes by explaining that he doesn’t want to return the Victorian attitude, but hope people could discover the new style which is suitable for our human community instead of calculated sloppiness.

Reflexion:

TV plays an indispensable role in our daily life. What we see and hear goes a long way to educating our society. However, violent and bloody scenes which appear on TV become more and more common. Violence on television can influence people to commit crimes. There have been several highly publicized studies recently published to look at the long terms effects of violence on television. According to the statistic, there are up to 75 percents child would imitate speaking way and posture which have been appeared on TV. It becomes a subject now in debate between the government and the television viewing public. Besides, it is not just programs that contain violence, but many of the promos and commercials also utilize violence.
Too much violent scene in TV may cause children a long-term influence. Children often behave differently after they've been watching violent programs on TV. For example, Children may be more likely to behave in aggressive or harmful ways toward others. Because children are good at imitating other’s action and talking way, absolutely they may copy the action which played on TV. They may treat others by what they have learned. Besides, Children may become less sensitive to the pain and suffering of others. Watching violence on TV may destroy children’s pure and innocent. They could disregard others who need help.
In order to give children the perfect growing background. Parents can encourage their children viewing shows that they feel are more beneficial, such as documentaries, educational shows and so on. Watch programs that demonstrate helping, caring and cooperation can influence children to become more kind and considerate.

Are Families Dangerous?

Summary:

In the article” Are Families Dangerous,” the author claims that the family becomes personal hell. Through the media we can know domestic violence almost takes place everyday and everywhere. A husband kills his wife or hits his children become a commonplace.
In our culture, we believe that the family is the perfect unit in our human society. Even politicians advocate that the family is priority. However, the author argues that the family may not the ideal and perfect living system because family is also a source of horrible violence. On the whole, the family is supposed be a harbor where full of love and gives people warming and comfortable environment. But it also becomes a hotbed for a strong man to violate.
According to this article, a woman’s enemy is not an outside stranger, but a person who had loved her before and sleeps with her in the house. And children are often abused by their intimate relatives. Not just kill or physical harm is violence; the author claims that a cold or disgusted glance is also a mental violence. It is also contradictive for Americans acknowledge that they agree “pro-family”, but most women still accept mind care for their losing self-respect.
There were many people opposed to organize a family who regarded it as an obstacle for human progress. But this idea was defeated by conservatism of the 80s. Today, most people would rather choose marriage than be a single. But in order to prevent domestic tragedy happened again and again, it is necessary to strengthen the women and children‘s protection and welfare.

Reflexion:

Domestic violence takes place every minute of the day and everywhere. It seems a routine that all kinds of domestic violence cases be put on the stage, when you read newspaper or watch TV. According to the statistic, in America, there are a domestic violence case happened in every 15 seconds. And Taiwan’s situation is more serious, bur there are less people dare to search for help.
Domestic violence can be divided into many different forms, including physical abuses, sexual assaults, psychological abuses and etc. These include any behaviors that intimidate, manipulate, humiliate, or wound someone. You may hard to believe that why the closest person would commit the most dreadful crime. But the fact is that the possibility of your lover hurt you are higher than the nearby stranger. And absolutely the harm you suffer would more serious than other matters. This kind of mistreat have long term damaging effects on the victims both physically and mentally
Therefore we cannot overlook the influence that was caused by domestic violence behaviors. No matter what, it is wrong behavior and the worst demonstration in the human society.
A healthy life not just means healthy physical conditions, both mental and social healths are equally important. Take child abuse for example, the victims often suffer from insomnia, nightmares, unsureness, isolation. Sometimes, they even refusal to contact with adults. When they grow up, they may with a certain tendency to abuse others. And it would become a vicious circle. Such growth experience has a real long term effects on the child, the child would not be able to blend into the society when they grow up.

Male Fixations

Summary:

In “Male Fixations,” Dave Barry claims that most guys regard themselves as mechanical guys, but not a responsible clearer. According to Barry, one guy can ignore aged dirty on commode in their bathroom, but they have a sense of responsibility to fix the commode when it breaks down.
However, not every man has innate ability to repair things well. Take Barry as example, He admits that he never repair anything indeed. This fact let him feel menacing. On one occasion, when he got his boat trailer, a salesman told him that he should “re-pack” the “bearing” every many miles. This salesman’s tone just like it is only right and nature. But Barry didn’t actually know what a “bearing” was. In order to hide his weakness on mechanics, his tip is pretend nothing happened when something is wrong.
Even his wife, Beth, who tells him there is a breakdown around their living; he would pretend that there is not any abnormal phenomenon. Finally, he argued that not merely mechanics, every man has instinct to behave they are in control of any situation, even if they are not. For example, before the Titanic sank in the ocean, maybe there were some guys still pretended clam and explained to his wife that it was a normal situation for furniture sliding up the walls.

Reflexion:

It seems a stereotype that men should have innate ability to manage matter on fixing some appliances...or at least, when something around the house breaks, it gets handed to the nearest guy to fix it. For example, when there is leaking in the kitchen, rather than calling professional mechanic to fix it, women always ask men who around them for help. But most men never learn how to repair things before and general schools also don’t teach it. In my opinion, there is a major reason could explain this strange situation.
This major reason is traditional concept; in the ancient society, men’s main job was hunting and fishing. And these jobs need some tools like arrow, lance and fishing net. In order to get food, they need make and repair tools by themselves. Naturally, fixing becomes man’s job. Besides, fixing is considered as a heavy work, women always believe that men are so strong that could move any kinds of stuffs in the house. So, there is no doubt that real man need know how to fix stuff.
However, although everyone focus on sexual equality in the modern society, men still need burden lots of preconceptions; for instance, they should fix stuffs or move heavy things. If they couldn’t do this, they would not be a real man. But I believe that this strange stereotype would be changed in one day.

A View from Mount Ritter

Summary

The article “A View from Mount Ritter,” is written by Joseph T. O’Connor when he was eighteen years old. He stated that how the mountain climbing experience changed his mind about life.

The bad weather in their journey resulted in the author’s bad mood. A huge thunderstorm and a bolt of lightning came suddenly that they couldn’t find a shelter. After the lightning died away, they hiked to a nearby shelter. Soon the author found something wrong that they were standing on a small island which was around streams. Then, they set up the tents in their worst night while the heavy rain poured down continuously and a small stream went through their tent. It is said that “Misfortunes never come singly.” After the exciting adventure, the author realized that the natures vary from minute to minute and it’s the most invigorating two weeks in his life.

The wonder experience made Joseph think seriously about the future and his past. He felt deeply regretful for his stubbornness and rebellion against others’ advices. “To get back one’s youth one has merely to repeat one’s follies,” said Oscar Wilde, reminds Joseph that he has to work harder in the future.

Reflections

I agree that the experience being close to the nature world can change our thoughts, relax our body and feel broad-minded. The magnificence of mountain scenery always makes me shocked. I feel how little human is comparing with the huge mountains.

Recently, I went to the Shei-Pa national park with my family. The Mount Shei-Pa is the second highest mountain in Taiwan and it is 3886 feet above sea level. The park is located around heavy mist and many large mountains. We walked through the forest paths and breathed fresh air or natural fragrance from trees. Chatting during walks improved the relationship of our family. We always focus on own business and rare talk to each other deeply. On the next day, we visited the famous divine tree and some scenic spots in the park. We saw the invincible vitality of the divine tree that it has lived over a hundred years.

The life in the mountain region is very simple easeful. It let us remove from country’s uproar and purify our mind. Close to the nature is my best way to release stresses. When you oppressed by a great amount of exams, try to visit some primitive places to be relaxed.

Summary and Response of " Appearances Are Destructive" by Mark Mathabane

Summary:
Curbing school violence has been an issue in public school in the U.S., and schools had input lots of resource in it. Mark Mathabane, the author of this article, suggests that dress codes can also be a way to protect students. His tow sisters left South Africa to the U.S.A., and went to a local public school. At first, the author thought that for no apartheid and have greater learning equipment, his sisters will had a great experience in learning. But it turns out that his sisters sometimes came home in tears, just for they didn't wearing pretty outfits. It is very different from South Africa, because at there, they only need to wear uniforms.
By visiting other public schools, the author found out that lots of students pay more attention on their appearance than on their academic succeed. Students compare how expansive their clothes are because it can give them status and respect, they also measure how much their parents love them by how much money their parents willing to buy the thing they long to. Those parents who don't have enough money to satisfied their child's appetite, often felt helpless in watching their child going into the wrong road.
Dress codes isn't lower the purpose of freedom. Lots of groups has their own uniform. Other countries where students wear school dress codes often have better grade than their American counterparts, because they can focus on their learning more not appearance. Americans should know the benefit of dress code.

Reflection:
After reading this article, it let me recall my experience in the first semester at university. At the first month of my university life, I was existing and happy to get rid off those boring school uniform. But after the month pass, I felt tired of thinking what I should wear in the next day, and want to have a uniform in college, too. Because I didn't have enough clothes to exchange, and didn't know what kind of cloth is better on me. Parents may thought that school is a place to study not to socialize, but they don't know the competition between peers, especially girls in this age don't want other think they are not attractive. But it doesn't mean that I want to wear dress code in college; on the contrary, now I am quite use to and enjoy this kind of life style.
I am glad that we need to wear uniform when we were in primary school and high school, because we need to have a right sense that academic is more important then appearance. We are rife with the media saying that pursuing attractive or expensive materiel can let us be more attractive, this kind of information can easily let our child become a material person. Though students can still compare their shoes, cell phone, watch...at school, the benefit of wearing dress code still won't change. After those students go to the university, they will have more control on their outfit. Because they are more mature and have a better critical thinking, they can easily separate right from wrong.

Summary and Response of " Killing Women: A Pop-Music Tradition" by John Hamerlinck

Summary:
Popular music has a vein of killing woman, according to john Hamerlinck, it leads to lots of domestic violences. Although this kind of violence sometimes reflected in movies and novels, the violence toward woman is most common shown in pop musics. This genre of woman- killing song didn't only show in recent years, in fact, it had already shown in an old type song called” murder balled”. This type of song is often blue, telling about their women are doing wrong with them, and how men get even with their women. For example, in 1920s, a song called” Careless Love” sang by Lonnie Johnson, Said” he promises to shoot his lover numerous time and then stand over her until she is finished dying”. This kind of song often belies a message of killing and retribution.
Because those type of songs are often smooth, and people can remember the song easily, influenced by the music, the physical violence become a way for some people to express their emotional pain. Other famous song like“ Run for Your Life” and “ Every Breath You Take” also sending a message of premeditation, stalking, and threats to their target. Another famous song called” Hey Joe” is also in this vein, which sang almost by all garage- band in that time. It had a lyric saying” where you goin' with that gun in your hand?”
The MTV generation also has a vein of woman- killing, such as” man in black” a murder song sang by Johnny Cash. This kind of MTV show like man digging a grave for his victim or even the odds by arming victim. Though there is a female covered the song” Run for Your Life” and sang “little boy” instead of “little girl”, the victim of violence are often women. This phenomena lead the public think it is common to” crimes of passion” and it is reasonable. But the author tell us this is not about love it is about power and control.

Response:
I was astonished that some popular music can lead to such a big trouble. By curiosity, I searched for some of these musics that mention in this article and listened them. Before I listen to those songs I though it was frightening and gloomy, but it turns out that the music was quite relaxed and catchy. It was surprised me that this kind of music can do such a big effort on our society, and mislead some people to do violence actions. But is this the really reason lead the man to act domestic violence? My answer is NO.
Men are often consider the master of a home and the leader in our society, so they can't bear to be treat by others. This may also make sense why those so-called” murder balled” songs often written or sang by men. Maybe it is not because of those music but because of man's nature action. I am not denying that music can't influence human's emotion, in fact, music sometime does lead our feeling. Sing a song is one of a way for human to express their feeling, sometimes it touch the emotion deep inside of our hart. The singer might act strange in their MTV, doing some crazy things, but audience need to separate right from wrong, not just follow the video.

Male fixations

Summary

Men are born to fix things historically. Men take the responsibility to do fixations so as to avoid cleaning. Dave Barry gives his own examples to describe that it is men’s damned fate to fix in “Male fixations.”

When there is something wrong in the house, the author will pretend to take a look at and say that everything is fine finally. This is all because his lack of fixing ability but he also has to pretend well-known for men’s dignity. He complains his disability for the tonsillitis. In his school time, he was absent due to the tonsillitis one day. His absence resulted that he missed the chance to acquire the knowledge of machinery with his classmates. Thus, he regards that he don’t know how to fix things deservedly.
There is another example when he was forced by a mechanical guy. One day a salesman told the author that every man should have instinctive ability to repack a bearing. Being afraid of salesman’s noogie, the author nodded his head knowingly though he was never sure what a bearing is.

The author always uses his technical trick to disguise that there is nothing wrong everywhere. He shows that this is a guy’s natural tendency to act as is they are in control of everything in the world.

Reflections

Actually I also have the cognition that men always have to fix all stuffs. I even believe that every man know repairs since they were born. I think that men are supposed to repair things owing to their strength.

The reason why I have this kind of thought is due to my father. If there are any household appliances or any problems in the house, my father can solve them by himself. He likes to DIY like making wooden cabinets and repairing furniture. In addition to fixing, my father is good at house works as well. To others’ amazement, he is especially good at cooking meals. I have missed his meals all the time when I go to the college. He is a man who has the ability combing fixing and house works. As I growing up, I realize that not every man can fix things. I become adoring my father much more. I definitely recommend he as the model of every man.

Although there is no rule that men have to know how to repair, men must learn a bit of the ability in my opinion. Girls are lack of the strength to do some heavy works, so they need men’s help sometimes. In fact, everyone has to know how to deal with the problems happening in daily life. This is the first lesson we have to learn when being independent.

Appearances are destructive

Summary
Appearances have become a kind of school violence in America. The experience of the author’s two sisters proves that dress codes can protect students and promote learning.

Although there are many advantages in American schools, the author’s two sisters’ homely clothes are mocked seriously. Students there pay a lot of attention to their appearances than their knowledge. Teachers are often disrupted by students dressing up or making up in the classes. Students also compete with their expensive dresses but not their academic achievements. They even measure parental love by how much their parents will spend on their clothing. As a result of the vicious competition, some poor children may get involved with gangs or peddle drugs to raise the money. Students emphasize the importance of appearances because they think that good clothing can earn more status and respect. Girls think that only sexy dresses make them more attractive rather than intelligence to boys.

Dress codes won’t deprive people of expression freedom. School dress codes can help teacher create the better learning environment. Students will also benefit from it because their minds are more focused on learning. American school should realize that dress codes bring much more benefits of safe and effective schools than the freedom of expression.

Reflections
I approve the viewpoint of Mark Mathabane in “Appearance Are Destructive.” Students should be required to follow dress codes in schools. I think that college is a proper time to let students have the freedom of expression. College students will be more mature to know which behavior is accurate to do.

In my experience, there are some restrictions on students’ appearances in my junior high school. Like all of the boys should have a cropped hair and girls’ length of hairs can’t be longer over ears. Of course, we can’t dye or perm our hairs. All of students’ hairs are exactly the same. Therefore, we won’t pay any attention on our appearances. On the other hand, there are no any restrictions on hairs in school recently. My younger brother pays a lot of attention on his appearances. He dyes and even perms his hairs and cares about his hair style very much. He spends more than half hour every morning to clean up his hairs though he already has no enough time to sleep. Wasting most of the time to dress up him results in his school falling behind.

Comparing to the above examples, I firmly believe that schools should have some dress codes toward students. Wearing uniforms can avoid students do some bad things out of schools because they will be recognized soon.

The Decline of Neatness

Summary
In the “The Decline of Neatness,” Norman Cousins claims that the sloppiness virus has expanded all aspects of our society. The virus affect on our sloppy style of dress, slovenly speech, emotionless attitude to violence and brutality and our negative human relationships.

Taking the way what we dress as an example first, sloppy and frayed jeans become a trend in recent times. People think it is fashionable to look disheveled rather than neatness today. However, the author thinks our messy clothing as if we had been stamped out by cookie cutters. Furthermore, the sloppy speech is so common today as well. People like to speak in chopped-up phrases and grunts or chants; they rarely speak in complete sentences. The media like to use some violent and foul words and prefer for the restricted rating than general rating. Thus, they always produce gaudy language and bloody scenes to attract audiences. This mindless violence is desensitizing our children’s feelings.

All the sloppy dress, slovenly speech and emotionless attitude affect our human relationships. Our acceptance of the casual sex has paralyzed our feelings and destroys our privacy. The author hopes that fashion designers and the media producers might show more respect for the human spirit but not pollute children’s genuine creativity.

Reflections
Today is the prosperous media’s generation. It brings lots of convenient benefits and some negative results as well. Media violence becomes a serious problem toward children. School bullying has emerged in an endless time.

Media violence is happened through TV programs, the NEWS, video games and the Internet. These Medias exist everywhere in the daily life, so it’s hard to avoid children contacting with them. TV programs provide children some violent heroes to imitate and these heroes often have some aggressive behaviors. Children may want to the heroes like the actors, so they use the violence to bully other children. They may be misled that such behaviors can make them popular. There are most of fight scenes in the video games. Children gain the achievement by defeat the opponents. These excitements lead to stress and negative feelings of children invisibly. The Internet is the most dangerous area because there are no any restrictions on the information which children absorb.

Parents can encourage children to seek more educational activities to reduce their daily exposure to media as entertainment. And parents have to educate their children that violence can make people lose friends and feel bad. The true heroes mean that people who are courageous and help others. They won’t use violence to solve problems.

Summary & Response of The Decline of Neatness

Summary of Decline of Neatness:

Norman Cousins is the author who attributes the so-called sloppiness virus that infects the wholesome society from three aspects like clothing, speech and relationship.

Cousins takes blue jeans as the example of clothing sloppiness. “Current usage is more reflective of a slavish conformity than a desire of ease.”, he emphasized. We human beings dodge ventionality in purpose, but we still put on a uniform on it. Everyone intend to alienate from the society by means of slavish wearing. Not knowing that everyone attempt to do so, slavish wearing soon become another way to present “ventionality” that they reluctant to obey.

While if sloppiness being applied in speech? The chopped-up phrases would be the proper representative compare with any other. Phrases like”you know” or “I mean” to cover up a damnable incoherence. Neatness in language should be as important as in dressing. Language violence has no difference with handgun possession. Our language is so foul that screenwriters themselves they avoid turning it in scripts. Not only entertainment but daily life fosters casual attitudes toward violence and brutality. People would also have the habit of doing everything run the risk of feeling nothing with casual attitude; it would create a sex fiend, moreover. According to Cousins, he claims that respect for the shortcoming of human is the most essential course in education. The first aim of education is to cultivate the respect of life, for that beean deadening of everything and feeling.

To sum up, Cousins doesn’t want to return Victorian’s etiquette but he hopes that calculated sloppiness would disappear in someday. Also, he hopes that people could response truly from films to show their genuine love and respect to human beings. Last but no least, school might foster the conception of things are rewarding than creativity in some aspects.

Response of Decline of Neatness:

Human being are gifted to be sensitive of untidy, uncomfortable wearing or appearance. But seems that contemporary people intend to violate the gift that creator owed to them. The rising of blue jeans is the best example of it. People tend to wear in depraved., making themselves like a homeless person with torn wearing. The motivation for them to do so is unique. Standing out from the crowd, distinguished from the people, make them self more characteristic than others. Namely, they hope to catch eye from other.

However, I think that they do not figure out that if every one want to be their so-called unique through same way. Everyone still the same, therefore, in vain. That is quite ridiculous and ironic. After all, they have devoted endeavoring to make themselves become unique but still in vain. Why they need to work a lot and no repay at last? The reason why could be traced to lack of confidence. For them , depraved wearing, looking is just a tunnel to obtain confidence. That is a morbid habit, I think.

Someone may claimed that they are just pursue or elaborate their creativity. I have to quoted from the author , few things are more rewarding than genuine creativity. Respect is one of precious and essential element they must to posses of. Creativity is an excuse. You can not say like that I am elaborate linguistic creativity so I could say anything I want it is my freedom. Such impractical vocabulary should in the condition of not violate other people. With this premise, everything will in peace. Seems that people do not have conception about it , that’s why there are numerous violence event would be printed on the newspaper.

Summary & Response of A Generation of Bigots Comes of Ages

Summary of A Generation of Bigots Comes of Ages

Children are our future. It is true but the way that things are going should be worried. A generation of bigots is coming of age. The mentioned issue is indicated by the author, Richard Cohen.

A recent public poll conducted for Anti-Defamation Leauge( ADL) could give us account as an evidence through that prognostication. The result of polls has always found that schooling person is likely to be more tolerant. For that reason, elder people are the most impatient group in the nation. However, in the survey of ADL, the result is quite disturbing. The result claims that both of younger and older American share same biases. When white guy were asked questions like if blacks prefer to remain on welfare rather than work. “Probably true “said by the 50-year-old respondents are occupied about 42%, on another hand, the young party is occupied as same as the elder, about 36%. Similarly, a majority of younger respondents thought blacks “complain too much about racism” and “stick together more than others”. Above two potions have occupied 68% and 63% respectively. The young has the highest percentage of agreement.

Abraham Foxman, the national director of ADL, claimed that the generation is destined to racist or racism to a degree, which he named it as a ‘crisis’. How could it happen? No one could give a reliable answer. But it could sure to guess that younger generation has ignored American recent history. Beside of historical ignorance there is still another , that is , affirmative action. The data suggests that progress on racial attitudes is being reserved.

A generation has come of age without any appreciation of the recent history of African-Americans. Affirmative action need to be re-examined and without being labed as racist.

Response of A Generation of Bigots Comes of Ages

“It’s nothing less than a calamity that a generation has come of age without a deep appreciation of the recent history of African-Amreican.”, quoted from the article.

I have to say, I can not agree with it anymore. In contemporary society, people seems to be eroded by other alien dominant cultures like Korea, Japan, America and else. Korean trend, which is marketing policy and monopoly, have tortured we Taiwan for such a long time. People adore proceeded Korean culture. But in my view, there is no difference between pop music styles. At best language and nationality are different. People who over intoxicated with alienate culture have already forgot or hate their homeland, Taiwan. The reason why I have saying so is my personal experience.

“I hate Taiwan, I wish that I could be American or other country but not Taiwan!!” said by childish and immature me myself. I love English rather than Chinese, I think it is cool when other witness while you are reading alien language. However, with the impulsive of English ecstasy I have chosed English as my major. Not until that time, did I know that the reason why I am so adore to English is that I did not deeply understand that culture. All I have seen , is the glorious package. Also, I learned a lesson from my teacher, she said the mission of applied foreign language student is not be adore to foreign culture, but promote your motherland culture to foreigner. Her words make me feel ashamed. Also, she make me to know that culture differentiate from country to country , it is unique and precious. We should not under look it.

The decline of Neatness

Summary

Norman Cousins was the editor of The Saturday Review, he discussed the problem about how the sloppiness virus affected the generation in the article. He thought that the generation was more favor in uncombed, unshaved, and undressed, which he thought that it was bad for the whole society.

He first gave an example about the phenomenon that people liked to buy things that was not normal. People liked to buy tattered, old, and stained jeans, instead of the clean and new one. They liked to buy oversize clothes or muddy sneakers. Cousins thought that the generation “disheveled is in fashion, neatness is obsolete.”Slovenly speech was also another problem that the generation had. People did not communicate in a good language like before. People liked to use chopped-up phrases and Cousins thought it was terrible to hear people used this kind of language. As he referred that English as a beautiful language, he was upset how generation changed the language. “Neatness in language is as important as in dress.”

Violence in language is also another problem. Cousins said that nowadays it was hard for people not to communicate without the use of bad language. And this phenomenon not only just happened in entertainment but also in our daily life.
Cousins suggested that the target we should focus in on education which was developing respect for life. School should persuade people in the clothes we wore, the way people spoke, and the care of human relationship, not just rewarded people who were school smart.

Reflection

I think that the sloppiness virus indeed influences our society a lot. It includes our clothing style and the form of speech.

Taking clothing styles as an example, many people tend to like wearing some uncomfortable old jeans instead of new one. And many people do not even care whether the clothes they have adopted even suits them or not. They just want to mimic the celebrities’ wearing and prove that they do follow the trend of fashion. That is quite a strange phenomenon. In my opinion, wearing suitable is more important than wearing fashionable.

The way we talk also has changed a lot. More and more people like to communicate with no more four words. Maybe this conversation can reduce time. However, it will also cause them not knowing how to communicate with others by using long sentences. Bad language is also another main problem in our society. Many children and teenagers are influenced by TV, movie and Internet. Their language becomes violent. It is really awful for people communicate with violence language. With bad language, it makes us ignore treating respect to others easily. Therefore, lots of conflict has happened more often in our society than before.

Perhaps technology bring us a lot conveniences, it also brings us some bad habits. Be a smart modern citizen, we should learn how to judge correctly instead of following or mimicking blindly.
