Appearances Are Destructive

Summary: p.203
The article Appearances Are Destructive written by Mark Mathabane and published by New York Times shows author’s reply to start spreading dress codes in the public schools in the United States.
When the public schools issue new strategies to control violence in school, the author’s sisters believe that dressing uniforms would benefit students rather than depending on instruments and safeguards’ assistance. Therefore, the author highly expects that the educational conditions in public school of the United States with abundant equipment would be better than black schools. However, those facilities do not work, and the sisters’ hard working at learning was running off the lines. They were frequently laughed by dressing too plain among those students dressing with gorgeous clothes and accessories.
Then, the author discovers that what his sisters faced is common to see around the country. For those students, they would rather care the outward appearance than their cultivation. Not only teachers find that their students pay more attention on labels than textbooks, but also parents find that their children evaluate their love depending on how much they are willing to reach their material satisfaction. Children believe that decorating themselves well is far important than improving their wisdom.
In fact, dress codes do not violate the freedom of expression, and it is daily portion of people’s lives. The author says that dressing uniforms promotes learning effect which let students in many countries do better than American’s. Also, students would pay more attention on their study than on pursuing famous labels. Then, Americans knows that the advantages of effectively ruling schools is far important than caring for whether to let students wear uniform or not.

Response:
Should students be required to wear uniforms to schools? In my opinion, of course they should. There are three advantages of wearing uniforms o school. Those are: to make students avoid being judged by their family background, to control students’ behaviors, and to avoid students being easily distracted by outside appearance like the author mentions.
For the first advantages, it can reduce the differences between the rich and the poor. The students who go to school are for learning and studying. If students wear casual clothes, they might secretly compare themselves with other peers. Then, the students’ values would be replaced by what they wear today instead of the effect of their study.
For the second advantages, it can help schools rule their students. If the students in this school do not be required to wear uniforms, the school would be like in a mess. On the other hand, if students are required to wear uniforms, they would let the school with regularity and may build a good impression to parents. Also, the students themselves would be responsible for their behavior and feel they are in the same group.
For the last advantages, it can help students pay more attention on their study instead of decorating themselves. Take some of the university students as an example, some of students spends most of their time chatting for what new clothes they just bought recently instead of discussing the progress of the report.
To sum up, requiring students to wear uniform can decrease many possible troubles. Also, it can protect the poor, rule the students and help students focus on study. As a result, I totally agree the policy to ask students to wear uniforms to school.

To me , I am quite miss the morning I get up without pondering my wearing today. It is quite annoying for me to thinking about todays wearing, as well as, today’s special in the restaurant. I believe either I or the chief in the restaurant have to consume most of their spiritual energy to figure out the damnable different from day to days. At this time, uniform, for them is like goodness’s smile, which represents that will bring them out of that dilemma.
But I hate to make no difference between each other, that are not a beings; that’s a robotic product. So that’s why I put the word “partially” at the beginning. They students could make some characteristic or elaborate creativity, imagination on their book bag or uniform. It is quite exciting and interesting to violate the rule with silence. For me, the best way to kill me is to ask me to abide non-creative, conservative rule, that’s boring. When I become older, it is interesting to recall my student’s life memory rather than become a robotic product.
To sum up, I promote the uniform but also I encourage students could make something different on their accessories.

  2. I agree with your opinion that students should be required to wear uniforms to schools. Just like you mentioned before, wearing uniforms can bring lots of advantages, including decreases peer pressure, eliminates dress codes and helps students pay more attention on their study.
A uniform can represent a discipline and reputation. When a child wears a uniform to school, this may evoke a certain degree of confidence and belonging; uniforms may give some children the impression that they belong to an important social group, not just a school. This may inspire them to do better in class. Uniforms also take away the pressure that some children may feel difficult to keep up with fashion trends--if everyone in class is wearing the same thing, it's difficult to feel out of place or uncomfortable. Besides, wearing uniform can reduce school violence. Because no one would fight in school for sneakers, jeans or other clothing possessions when other person who wears the same thing. According to the statistics, the crime rate was dropped by 74 percent when the policy of school uniforms put into effect.
Although most of students don’t like wear uniforms who regard it as restriction and constrain, wearing uniform brings more advantages. In my conclusion, whether you approve or not, each school must make the decision for itself based on their needs.

  3. I also think that school uniform is an essential part of school life. School uniform should not be banned, because of money. Our economic circumstances can have great affect, and more often than not, those with less money will face many problem, as their children may feel shy when they stand in front of other students, or these poor children will do the illegal things to earn money to buy expensive clothes.
Wearing less expensive less fashionable clothes, different clothing from everyone else creates division, which school uniform can avoid. To be set apart and look different, in any way from everybody else almost certainly makes people targets for bullying, especially in schools. Young children who do not know the effect of bullying will always pick on the child who does not look the same
Also, because school uniform allows us to easily identify someone as a student of a specific school. If someone from another school physically or verbally abuses someone or done something bad, they are able to take the situation into your own hands and find the school they are from, and contact Principal of the school and inform them of their students’ behaviors. Therefore, this rule actually makes many good sides for students.
