Summary and Respond of Appearance Are Destructive

Summary:
In the “Appearance Are Destructive” this article, we can know the greater way to protect students is carrying out dress code rather than installing metal detectors or hiring security guards, and promoting learning also needs this way.
According to the author’s sisters’ experience, they suffered from the same problem about dress code. Originally, they did not be care about their appearance during the period of school in South Africa, but everything was changing when they transferred to different school in America. In South Africa, everybody all wear uniforms; however, in America, students did not be required to wear uniforms. Therefore, American students always think how to make themselves become more beautiful all day long.

In common situation, whether boys or girls all care about their clothes and appearances because they think clothes and appearance can attract sexual attention rather than intelligence and academic excellence. In fact, causing this situation to increase is not only the responsibility of school without dress code, but also parents’ pampered. Thus, to wear uniforms is a better way to curb the situation.

To sum up, wearing uniforms not only can be neater and less disruptive in class. We can observed that dress codes apply in every aspect of our lives such as flight attendants, bus drivers and so on. If America can be aware of those benefits about safe and effective, they can avoid students’ danger and promote them learning.

Response
As time goes by, more and more people in the modern pay attention to the freedom of expression. In order not to infringe on freedom of expression, some schools carry out abolishing dress codes. However, students become to care about their appearances because schools abolish the rule of dress codes. Therefore, this situation would also cause some problems.

In the beginning, in my opinion, students will be worried about dressing themselves. Maybe because of this reason, they are going to be late for school. In order to avoid some people criticizing their dressing, they would rather pay their appearances than get something important such as personality, wisdom and so on.

Second, the problem is the security of school. We can try to imagine that if students all wear informal dresses in the school, people can not tell students from strangers at the first glance. Therefore, even if a stranger is committing a crime, common people would think that maybe they just help school to do some works. For example, strangers actually steal computers in the school, but those people who are students would think that maybe they are engineers and computers need to be fixed. These events often happen in colleges because colleges do not have dress codes.

Third, students won’t focus on their subjects during class. Teachers would find that most students are busy to comb their hair, make up their faces, or tidy their dresses. Therefore, their learning efficiency will decrease, and teachers will also decrease their teaching enthusiasm.

To sum up, I think proper rules would be good if those rules will have benefits to common people. Thus, in other words, the dress code is also good to students so schools should not abolish the rule of dress codes carelessly. Schools can infringe these three problems if they can think twice not to abolish dress codes.

  1. I totally agree with you. I surely think that the dress code is need in school. It should lead to safer and more respectful learning and teaching environments. It is a good way to protect student and promote learning. If we don’t use the school dress code to educate students, students will turn to compare their clothes with their classmates. And during these ages of the students are much more care about other’s judgment, especially the same generation. Then many problems may be shown up. Someone become self-abasement because of the better clothes, and someone become self-important because of the common clothes. Or even the worse thing is that arrogant students will mock at other one or bully them. Also students are distractive in the class, they are busy to comb their hair, make up their faces, or tidy their dresses just like you said. Base on your three problems you had shown, I believe schools will deeply think not to abolish dress codes. In Taiwan, I am so happy that most of the schools still have a dress codes though not be performed as well as before. Instead, in the other countries many schools abolish these rules. I hope these rules would be performed probably and well in the world.

  2. All of people are missing the point: it calls school where every thing's supposed to be about learning academics not how to dress. Students today put much attention on their appearances. Everyone deserves an education despite what he or she is wearing. It is just wrong to change the idea of dress code because wearing uniform for all students has many very good points. First, it allows all students to wear the same clothes as other students. Some students cannot afford baggies or other expensive clothes for school. This uniform appearance will now give all students the same feeling of equality. Second, people who wear baggies can now concentrate on their learning academics.
Besides, once you get out of school, you are going to wear a uniform of some sort every day. If you choose to go the wrong way, you'll wear an orange jumpsuit day in and day out. If you are in medicine, you'll wear scrubs or a lab coat every day. If you are in business, you'll wear a suit and tie, or something very like the polo shirts and chinos you wear for school. Almost every job will require a certain standard of dress. School is our preparation for work. It just needs few hours a day to wear the uniform. If students cannot accept that, it means they may face many problems when they start to work.
