The Decline of Neatness

Summary:

According to this article, the author, Norman Cousins, claims that the “sloppiness virus” has gradually diffused to the four corners of the earth. This kind of virus affects us on the mode of dress, informal speech, slipshod attitude on violence and ruthlessness, and futile human relationship.
First, the author argues our style of dress. Blue jeans can stand for our generation, but rather than complete and neat, modern people prefer wearing tattered and discolored one. Cousins points that although today’s sloppy dress represent fashion trend, it undoubtedly makes people look like they had been “stamped out by cookie cutters.”
Besides, our speaking ways also deteriorate. Without using complete sentences and graceful language, people prefer to shorten phrase but fail to make sentences more coherent. What’s more, violent language gradually invades our society, because more and more violent and cruel elements are added on our movie. And children would become benumbed and brutal. It could let them turn a blind eye to someone who was hit by others. The effect on watching TV also lead youngster becomes a couch potato who just sits sluggish and munches popcorn in front of the TV.
Finally, the author analyses that untidy dressing, speech and emotion may affect human relationship. Too much sex in films may reduce our feeling on toward sex and also strip our privacy. Cousins concludes by explaining that he doesn’t want to return the Victorian attitude, but hope people could discover the new style which is suitable for our human community instead of calculated sloppiness.

TV plays an indispensable role in our daily life. What we see and hear goes a long way to educating our society. However, violent and bloody scenes which appear on TV become more and more common. Violence on television can influence people to commit crimes. There have been several highly publicized studies recently published to look at the long terms effects of violence on television. According to the statistic, there are up to 75 percents child would imitate speaking way and posture which have been appeared on TV. It becomes a subject now in debate between the government and the television viewing public. Besides, it is not just programs that contain violence, but many of the promos and commercials also utilize violence.
Too much violent scene in TV may cause children a long-term influence. Children often behave differently after they've been watching violent programs on TV. For example, Children may be more likely to behave in aggressive or harmful ways toward others. Because children are good at imitating other’s action and talking way, absolutely they may copy the action which played on TV. They may treat others by what they have learned. Besides, Children may become less sensitive to the pain and suffering of others. Watching violence on TV may destroy children’s pure and innocent. They could disregard others who need help.
In order to give children the perfect growing background. Parents can encourage their children viewing shows that they feel are more beneficial, such as documentaries, educational shows and so on. Watch programs that demonstrate helping, caring and cooperation can influence children to become more kind and considerate.
